The most common type of headaches is tension headache.

Recent research has suggested that acupuncture is effective for tension-type headache

A tension headache is the most common type of primary headache accounting for about 90% of all headaches. The pain is bilateral and the head is like being squeezed. A tension headache can be episodic or chronic.

Acupuncture is used to treat tension-type headache and many people who used this treatment have benefit from it. Also there are research evidences showing the effectiveness of acupuncture for tension type headaches.

Recently research from Germany has shown the updated data. Results have shown that the proportion of participants experiencing at least 50% reduction of headache frequency was much higher in groups receiving acupuncture than in control groups. In seven good quality trials acupuncture group had high reduction of headache frequency compared with sham acupuncture.  The conclusion from the data suggested that acupuncture is effective for treating frequent episodic or chronic tension-type headaches. More recent research suggested that effect of acupuncture was better than controls. Headache intensity and frequency of taking pain killers was significantly reduced in acupuncture group compared with sham acupuncture group. Other research groups also support the effectiveness of acupuncture in treating primary headache particular tension-type headache and migraine. They suggested that acupuncture is an effective and valuable option for patients suffering from frequent tension-type headache and migraine; also acupuncture is cost-effective treatment.

Acupuncture reduces migraine effectively

A WHO survey showed that migraine was ranked as the seventh highest cause of disability in the world, accounting for 2.9% of all years of life lost to disability. But the pain management is still challenging due to ineffectiveness of medication and side effects of drugs. People turn to complementary and alternative methods to help.

Recent research studied the effectiveness of acupuncture for migraine. In this study 91 patients aged from 18-70 with a history of migraine for at least 12 months and a mimimum 4 days migraine per 4 weeks attending the neurology outpatient clinic at the University Hospital Hradec Kralove.

The result has shown that after 12 weeks of acupuncture treatments and 6 months follow-up the number of migraine days was reduced significantly more compared with control group. The number of responders to the treatment was also greater in acupuncture group. The intake of medication was reduced significantly in acupuncture group at the end of the treatment and 6 month follow-up.

Neck pain, acupuncture can help.

Acute neck pain is a sudden-onset pain in the neck. It is often due to neck muscles strain and muscle spasm. This can be caused by poor posture, sleep in an awkward position, carrying heavy loads, stay in one position for a prolonged period of time etc. One might not find exactly causes. The pain is sudden and can be very severe. This makes the person with the pain panicking. Movement of the neck is restricted because of the pain. Acupuncture can help release the pain and speed up the recovery.

One of the muscles to cause headache and neck pain is trapezius. This is a broad triangular muscle at neck and upper back, one of the largest superficial muscles at the back. It attaches to the base of the skull and extends down to the neck, the upper back until midback; laterally it inserts to the shoulder blades.

Tight neck and shoulders associated with aching and discomfort in the related area is very common. The muscles can become tender, and movement is limited. Tight muscles are often chronic and need to be treated. Tight muscles block blood circulation of the body and muscles don’t get enough nutrition and become weak and easily get further damage. Because of blocked energy supply, you will feel tired all the time. Poor posture is a common cause of tight neck and shoulders. This causes overuse some groups of muscles and causes micro injury to the muscles which become tight to protect themselves from further injury. Furthermore, the tight neck and shoulders  pain will make poor posture worse. It becomes a viscous circle. This needs to be treated, otherwise tight neck and shoulders pain would not resolve itself. Acupuncture is very effective to release the muscle tension, reduce the tightness and pain, correct poor posture, and improve blood circulation.

Why put up with shoulder pain? acupuncture can help.

Shoulder pain is very common: about 3 in 10 adults are affected by them at any one time. Frozen shoulder and rotator cuff disorders are most common in middle-aged and older people. The most common symptoms are pain and stiffness in the shoulder. Also the amount of movement in affected shoulder joint is reduced. In severe cases, the shoulder may not be moved at all. Though it is a common condition, the treatment remains challenging. Acupuncture is effective to treat shoulder pain for pain relief, improving range of motion and function.

Insomnia

Insomnia is that sleep problems last for a long time which would affect overall heath. The causes of insomnia include two aspects: psychological problems, such as stress, anxiety and depression; physical problems, such as physical chronic pain, asthma, heart problems etc. Recent research showed that people with insomnia have more activities in their central nervous system and/or autonomic nervous system and this keeps them awake. Acupuncture is proven to be effective for insomnia because it has direct effects on peripheral nerve system and muscle relaxations; it also regulates autonomic nervous system and central nerve activity.

Facial acupuncture  is the acupuncture on the face for anti-aging purpose. It is for skin rejuvenation and becomes more and more popular. It is a natural and healthy way for anti-aging. What is the benefit of facial acupuncture? Facial acupuncture can eliminate wrinkles, moisturize facial skin, improve skin texture and color, relax facial muscles, and decrease sagging skin, clear spots and pigmentation.

Fertility and miscarriages

A survey in the US has shown that one in five couples with infertility have tried acupuncture over 18 months of observation period. In the UK treatment for infertility with acupuncture increased fivefold in 10 years time. In Switzerland, Germany and Austria, one third of the fertility centres offer acupuncture treatments. If you are seeking IVF treatment for your fertility, acupuncture treatment as an adjunct treatment helps you to achieve best IVF success rate.
