Understanding Osteoporosis: Causes, Risks, and Prevention

Osteoporosis is a medical condition characterized by a decrease in bone density and strength, making bones more fragile and susceptible to fractures. Often referred to as a "silent disease," osteoporosis progresses without symptoms until a fracture occurs, typically in the hip, spine, or wrist.

What Is Osteoporosis?

Bones are living tissue that constantly undergo remodeling—a process where old bone is broken down and new bone is formed. Osteoporosis occurs when the rate of bone loss exceeds the rate of bone formation, resulting in porous and brittle bones.

Causes and Risk Factors

Osteoporosis often has no symptoms in its early stages. However, signs may include:

Back pain from fractured or collapsed vertebrae

Loss of height over time

A stooped posture

Bone fractures that occur more easily than expected

Diagnosis typically involves a bone mineral density (BMD) test using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA), which measures the density of bones in the spine, hip, or wrist.

Prevention and Management

Preventing osteoporosis begins early in life and includes:

Nutrition: Adequate intake of calcium and vitamin D is essential for bone health. Dairy products, leafy greens, and fortified foods are good sources.

Exercise: Weight-bearing and resistance exercises help build and maintain bone density.

Lifestyle changes: Avoid smoking and limit alcohol consumption.

Medical treatment: For those diagnosed, medications like bisphosphonates, hormone therapy, or newer drugs such as denosumab and teriparatide may be prescribed.
